For my Visual Design project, I created a cohesive promotional package for Utah Tech University's production of Picnic by William Inge. This project included both a poster and a playbill, designed to capture the essence of the play and its 1950s small-town setting. The 11"x17" poster and 5.5"x8.5" playbill cover feature a 1950s-style illustration and design, incorporating a color palette and typography inspired by mid-century America. The illustrations evoke the heat and tension of a summer picnic while symbolizing the play's themes of romance, change, and small-town life. Both the poster and playbill will be used to promote the play on campus, ensuring visual consistency across all promotional materials.
I began by researching the themes and setting of Picnic to understand the mood and atmosphere of the play. I created several thumbnail sketches to explore different concepts and layouts, focusing on capturing the 1950s small-town vibe. After selecting a direction, I moved on to develop a comprehensive design, incorporating 1950s-style illustrations and typography that reflected the period. I gathered feedback from peers and made adjustments to improve the visual storytelling and overall composition. Once the final design was set, I refined the layout for both the poster and playbill, ensuring visual consistency. Finally, I prepared the files for print, ready for distribution to promote the production on campus.
